Jasper Fforde is the author of the Thursday Next series, plus a couple of unrelated books on nursery crimes. His latest book is the The Fourth Bear. Fforde's whole universe of investigators for nursery rhymes and story books and questioning what isn't written in them (such as why are the Mummy and Daddy Bears sleeping in different beds) appeals to my twisted sense of humour.
All this is apropos of nothing, except that the local ABC website has an interview with Fforde up at the moment. I hadn't known he had received 76(!) rejections prior to having one accepted for publication (presumably The Eyre Affair).
Anyway, both the interview and his books are recommended reading (the latter are particularly good for plane trips, I've found).
